Orlando di Lasso
A XVI. század egyik legnagyobb zeneszerzője 1532 körül született a
németalföldi Mons-ban, Hainaut tartományban. Énekesfiúként a St.
Nicholas templom kórusának volt tagja. 1544-ben a szicíliai alkirály,
Ferdinando Gonzaga magával vitte Itáliába. Először Szicíliába, majd
Milánóba került, később Nápolyba és Rómába is tovább utazott. 1555-56
körül Antwerpenbe költözött. 1556-ban V. Albrecht bajor herceg
meghívására csatlakozott a müncheni udvari kórushoz, melynek 1563-tól
haláláig vezetője volt. 1562-ben Frankfurtba ment Miksa császár
koronázására. Az 1560-as évektől kezdve többször látogatott Itáliába.
1570-ben Miksa császár nemesi oklevelet adományozott neki. 1571-ben
többször is díjat nyert. Utazásai során művészetét mindenhol elismerték
és a "zene fejedelmének" kijáró tisztelettel fogadták. 1590-ben súlyos
agyvérzés érte, ami miatt évekig nem tudott dolgozni. 1594-ben halt meg
Münchenben.
Orlando di Lasso a XVI. század talán legsokoldalúbb és legtermékenyebb
zeneszerzője volt. Közel 2000 műve maradt fenn a legkülönbözőbb egyházi
és világi műfajokban. Szinte minden európai udvarban beszélt nyelven
otthonosan komponált. Tanítványai között olyan nagynevű zeneszerzők
voltak, mint például Giovanni Gabrieli.
Officium Defunctorum
Felvételünkön Orlando di Lasso Lectiones sacrae novem ex Libris
Hiob
című ciklusát mutatjuk be, melyet a halotti zsolozsma gregorián
tételeivel egészítettünk ki. A Jób-könyvéből vett idézetek a szertartás
olvasmány-szakaszainak liturgikus szövegei. A bemutatott zenei anyag
tulajdonképpen két imaórának szertartászenéje. E két zsolozsma a Matutinum
A negyedik
rész – a reggeli dicséret – szintén zsoltározással indul, végül az
ószövetségi canticum, Zakariás hálaéneke zárja a műsort. A teljes
szertartás egy bevezető invitatoriummal kezdődik, mely a 94.
zsoltár szövegére énekelt gregorián dallam.
A meghaltakra való emlékezés, illetve a holtakért való imádkozás
szokása a X. században a clunyi kolostorból indult el. A XIV. századra
már általánosan bevezették. A zsolozsma olvasmányainak szövegei
Jób-könyvéből vett idézetek. Jób-könyve ótestamentumi kánoni irat.
Filozófiai jellegű mű, a bölcsességi irodalom fő munkája. (A
Mind a három barát kitart a hagyományos
Jób a vádaskodások ellenére kitart a maga állítása mellett.
1560-as években is megzenésítette.

One of the greatest composers of the 16th century, Orlando di Lasso was
born in c.1532 in Mons in Hainaut, a Franco-Flemish province. As a
chorister he sung in St Nicholas church choir. Entering the service of
the Sicilian viceroy Ferdinando Gonzaga he travelled to Italy in 1544,
lived in Sicily and Milan, and later went on to Naples and Rome. He
moved to Antwerp in about 1555-56. To the invitation of the Bavarian
Prince Albert V he joined the Munich court choir in 1556. He remained maestro
di capella of the Bavarian court until his death. In 1562 he was in
Frankfurt for the coronation of the Emperor Maximilian II. In the 1560s
he made several visits to Italy. In 1570 Emperor Maximilian II
conferred upon him a patent of nobility. In 1571 he paid a visit to
Paris where he attended the audience of Charles IX. Later the French
court sought to employ him as court composer, but negotiations were
interrupted. In 1574 he was conferred upon a Knight of the Golden Spur
by the Pope. He was awarded several prizes at the Évreux musical
competitions. His art was appreciated wherever he travelled, and he was
widely celebrated as the "king of music". In 1590 he suffered a violent
stroke and he was unable to work for years. He died in Munich in 1594.
Orlando di Lasso was perhaps one of the most diverse and prolific
composers of the 16th century. Near two thousand works of his have come
down to us in different sacred and secular musical genres. He was at
home in writing compositions in almost every language spoken at the
royal courts of Europe. Among his pupils there were many acclaimed
composers, including Giovanni Gabrieli.
Officium Defunctorum
This recording presents Orlando di Lasso's cycle Lectiones
sacrae
novem ex Libris Hiob to which we have added the plainchant
parts of
the funeral office. The excerpts taken from the Book of Job are the
liturgical texts of the lessons of the service. The music in this
recording is, in effect, the liturgical music of two prayer meetings.
The two offices consist of the Matutinum (itself divided into
three parts) and the Laudes. The three parts of the prayer
meeting are called nocturnus. Each of the three nocturni
begins with a psalm which is followed by three alternating lessons and
responsories. The fourth part – the morning laud – also begins with a
psalm and ends with the Old Testament canticle, the Prophet Zechariah's
hymn of thanksgiving. The service begins with an introductory invitatorium,
a plainchant to the text of the 94th psalm.
The tradition of remembering the deceased, and prayers for the dead
originate from the monastery of Cluny in the 10th century. By the 14th
century the practice was formally introduced to the liturgy. The texts
of the lessons in the funeral office are excerpts from the Book of Job,
an Old Testament canonical text. It is a philosophical work, and is
considered the fundamental work of wisdom literature. (The designation
"Book of Wisdom" in the Old Testament comprised five books: Job,
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Jesus Shirach's Son, and the Book of Wisdom.
The Song of Songs is often mistakenly also included. The ideas they
express are not unlike the conceptual background of the psalms, and
partly the books of Tobias and Baruch.)
"There was a true servant of God, a man named Job, who lived a rich and
happy life. God allowed Satan to try Job, to see whether he would
remain faithful to Him in his misfortune. Job first lost his substance
and his children, but he resigned to the will of God to take back what
He had given him. Then Satan smote Job with sore boils and painful
affliction. Job held out, and refused his wife's advice to curse God.
Then three friends of Job, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar came upon him to
mourn with him and comfort him. Job and his friends compare their views
of divine justness. All three of his friends agree on the conventional
idea, that man is rewarded on earth, and if Job is afflicted it is
because he has sinned. He may appear good in his own eyes, but not in
God's. Despite the blames Job insists on his own claim. He weighs up
theoretical considerations against his painful experience and the
unjustness on earth. He keeps coming back to this, and over again he
encounters the secret of an impartial God who punishes the righteous.
Job now morally opposes Him, now resigns to His will – as his physical
condition improves or worsens."
Orlando di Lasso had set to music the texts from the Book of Job
earlier, in the 1560s. However, the version on this recording is a
later one which Lasso completed between 1580-1582. It was published in
Munich in 1582 by Alban Berg. Lasso dedicated this series to the duke
Julius von Würzburg.
