Met deze cd krijgt de luisteraar een beeld van het gevarieerde aanbod aan polyfone muziek dat men kon horen in Leuven en andere steden in de Lage Landen in de tweede helft van de zestiende eeuw, zowel binnenskamers als in openlucht.

In het oeuvre van Clemens non Papa (ca. 1510 – 1555 of 1556) is zowel het geestelijke als het wereldlijke goed vertegenwoordigd. Het introverte, beschouwende (dit blijkt bijvoorbeeld uit het motett Si mors dissolvit of uit het Nederlandse lied God es myn licht) krijgt een evenwaardig aandeel met het extraverte en het speelse (vb. het drinklied La, la, la Maistre pierre of de meer frivole zettingen van Frisque et gaillard of Te schepe waert gaen). Dit vullen we aan met instrumentale versies van werken van Clemens of heuse bewerkingen voor diverse instrumenten (vb. Ammerbach, Bassano, de Cabeçon) alsook met een keuze uit het gevarieerde aanbod aan instrumentale muziek uit de drukken van Petrus Phalesius.

Clemens non papa is in de muziekgeschiedenis vooral verbonden met de Souterliedekens, een serie van 159 driestemmige Nederlandstalige psalmzettingen uitgegeven door de Antwerpse drukker Tielman Susato (1556-7).

De bijnaam "Non papa" (niet de paus) die Clemens gedurende zijn hele carrière zal hanteren duikt voor het eerst op in het schitterende liedboek van Zeghere Van Male, vervaardigd in Brugge in 1542. Mogelijk reeds vanaf 1545 werd hij zangmeester van de privékapel van Philippe II de Croÿ, om na het overlijden van de prins in 1549 in de herfst van 1550 'sanger ende componist' te worden van de Illustere Mariabroederschap te 's-Hertogenbosch.

De link tussen Clemens non papa en Phalesius is verder ook duidelijk: de meeste werken werden bij Phalesius uitgegeven. Daarmee vertoefde hij in het goede gezelschap van Thomas Crecquillon die ook bijzonder goed vertegenwoordigd is in de drukken van Phalesius. Overigens is er ook een meer rechstreekse een band tussen Clemens en Crecquillon: verschillende werken werden aan beide componisten toegeschreven, beiden hadden contacten met Leuven en Crecquillon schreef het Response: Adieu l'espoir ou mon ceur aspiroit op het chanson Misericorde au martir Amoureulx van Clemens.

Jacobus Clemens (15? – 1555) is one of the greatest polyphonists of 16th century Flanders. But this CD is more than a CD devoted to Clemens' works. The recording is an integral part of the more broadly-conceived festival Townscape – Scoundscape / Sounds of the city of Louvain from the 16th century, in which attention is primarily focused on Petrus Phalesius, the Louvain music publisher and on musical life in the oldest university town of the Netherlands. Clemens was the composer whose name appeared the most in Phalesius' publications, next to Thomas Crecquillon who was also strongly represented in music published in Louvain. Works by Clemens non Papa are therefore combined with songs by Crecquillon and a selection of the highly varied array of instrumental music that came off Phalesius' presses. This CD offers an image of the colourful supply of polyphonic music that was to be heard both inside and out in Louvain and elsewhere in the Low Countries halfway through the 16th century. — capilla.be
