English liner notes

MATEO FLECHA EL VIEJO, was born in 1481 at Prades (Tarragone) and died at the Cistercian convent of Poblet. There is a lot of confusion in the little that is known of his life.

In 1732, J.G. Walter mentions him in his "Musikalisches Lexikon" but he confuses him with his son Mateo Flecha el Joven on whom he has incorrect data.

Although the sources are rather fragmentary, we known that Juan Castello (choir-master at the Barcelona Cathedral) gave him his first music formation. First of all he is assigned to the Lerida Cathedral and then from 1544 to 1548 he is assigned as "Maestro di capilla" at the court of Charles V's daughters.

He is a colleague of A. de Cabezon and F. de Soto. At Charles V's chapel he thoroughly studies Flemish Polyphony.

His only masterpiece, las Ensaladas, which is richly inspired, joins magisterially his strict writings with not only satire, popular music but also harsh polyphony. Thus we obtain Ensaladas, a mixture of genres or salad.

From this point of view he is ahead by 50 years of Orazio Vecchi's madrigal-commedies.

Languages (Spanish, Catalan, Italian, Latin, "Gugurumbe" an African dialect with imitative harmony, for example) and metrics are used freely but render the character of the text alive and descriptive.

Nowadays, thus unusual mixture of folkloric and scholarly music can be found on Good Friday in Andalousia during the procession. It is accompanied by the "Saeta" which is sung by the women from their windows.

Here is a synopsis of the Negrina:
1. The joyous announcement of the coming of Christ.
2. Description of the joy that this news brings to the shepherd.
3. Their voyage to Bethlehem — the shepherds speak together.

The synopsis of la Justa is the story of a joust where:
1. Lucifer who is accompanied by his attendants enters the arena.
2. Description of Adam, the fighter.
3. Fight and defeat of Adam.
4. The coming of Christ and his victory over Lucifer.

The style of our interpretation, particularly in the vibrato [1], the glissandos, the quiebro reyterado and the instrumental coloration, refers to the one found in the Spanish 16th century.

Note that we accompany ourselves with instruments as was done at that time. Francisco Guerrero informs us that the motets were accompanied by "chirimias" and "Fagotes".

[1] Example of vibrato: "a Dios" in the last part of the "Negrina" and "los Santos Padres" in the second part of "La Justa".
