Con «Viaggio in Italia», La Reverdie propone un
percorso attraverso generi musicali, idiomi stilistici, aree culturali
precedentemente in uso.
composizioni, siano essi in latino, in italiano o in francese.
CLAUDIA CAFFAGNI
With this 'Journey in Italy', La Reverdie proposes an itinerary
illustrating the richness and variety of Italian musical life at the
beginning of the 15th century, through its genres, its stylistic idioms
and cultural sites.
The common theme of the journey is the Italian adventure of the famous
Franco-Flemish composer Guillaume Dufay, which spanned some twenty
years. He was a party to the most signoficant political and cultural
events of the Peninsula, making him a key figure in the mixing of the
era's musical styles, an era that witnessed the progressive
disappearance of the specific characteristics of the mediaeval
polyphonic schools and the realisation of a veritable common European
language.
A highly cultivated ecclesiastic and diplomat — and incontestably
charming—, coveted by the Malatesta family, the Pope (who
summoned him to Rome, then to Florence and Bologna) and the Savoys, as
well as an esteemed friend of the dukes of Este, Dufay thus began his
extraordinary career as a composer in Italy.
An exceptional representative to the most refined Flemish counterpoint
tradition but, intelligently, just as open to the British taste for
full-bodied sonorities as to the evocative simplicity of the Italian
melic, Dufay laid the foundations for a new, pan-European musical
language. He elaborated a highly personal style in which all the
artistic splendour of the Late Middle Ages blended with the innovative
ferments of the early Italian Renaissance.
In order to bring out the vitality of Dufay's stylistic syncretism, we
preferred occasional compositions and those which are simply worldly,
to the imposing repertoire of cycles and fragments from the Ordinarium
Missæ. This choice allows us to compare our composer with
others who were also active in Italy at that time. From the latter, we
have selected pieces that are particularly interesting for their common
historic links. Moreover, it was the manuscripts — the principal
instruments of our research — that gave us the idea of putting
together an anthology (in that era, musical compilations devoted to a
single composer did not exist) and revealed traces of a network of
relationships between the composers and those who commissioned works
from them, allowing for shedding light on Dufay's stylistic evolution.
The ballads O spirito gentil by Prepositus Brixiensis and Morir
desio by Bartholomeus de Bononia, charming examples of the
typically Italian poetic and musical flowering that captivated and
inspired the young Flemish musician, are amongst the 25 pieces by
Italian composers included in the Canonici Miscellaneous 213, a
manuscript of Venetian origin housed in the Bodleian Library at Oxford,
which also contains the rondeau Quel fronte signorille and
ballad C'est bien raison by Dufay.
White mensural notation is used, which replaced black mensural notation
in the 1430s. A singularity in the song Quel fronte signorille
and the isorythmic motet O Sancte Sebastiane / O maryr Sebastiane:
the composer's name appears in the form of a riddle. The syllable FA is
interpreted as a sign of solmisation in soft hexachordum, which
signifies B flat in modern terms.
Manuscript M.1.11 from the Biblioteca Estense in Modena, copied
out by a single hand and using white mensural notation, is one of the
most important sources for Dufay's compositions. It was probably
commissioned for the court of the dukes of Este of Ferrara and also
contains music by Bartholomeus de Bononia. The importance of the Este
court in the cultural landscape of the early Quattrocento is attested
to by the ballad C'est bien raison, an explicit homage to Duke
Niccolò III of Ferrara, and by the instrumental dance Belfiore,
which shares the name given to the castle built for the Duke between
1393 and 1429.
From Manuscript M.1.11 comes the hymn Exultet celum laudibus
and a few motets, including Mirandas parit, which Dufay wrote
in honour of the city of Florence, celebrated a decade earlier by the
Dominican Antonius de Civitate (or Antonio da Cividale) with O
felix flos Florentia. With a highly personal style, Antonius, just
like Dufay, was integrated fully into the cultural climate of Italian
Humanism: they personally wrote the texts for all their compositions,
indiscriminately in Latin, Italian or French.
O felix flos Florentia by Antonius de Cividale and Dufay's
isorhythmic motet Vassilissa ergo gaude are to be found in the
famous Manuscript Q15 from Bologna's Civico Museo Bibliografico
Musicale, dated before 1440, as suggests the use of black mensural
notation. The presence of 62 pieces by Dufay, along with composers such
as Ciconia, Christophorus de Monte and Matheus de Brixia, along with
allusions to precise historic events contained in the texts of some
motets, let us suppose that the Q15 was written for the cathedral of
Padua.
The programme of our 'journey' begins — after the monumental
motet Supremum est mortalibus bonum — with two composers
who were working in Padua in the years preceding Dufay's arrival in
Italy, Ferragut and Prepositus Brixiensis. Less well known, they were
nonetheless influential disciples of the counterpoint school of
Ciconia, the famous composer from Liège who inaugurated the
great season of migrations of Franco-Flemish musicians towards the
Italian courts and cathedrals. The journey ends with the notes of the
motet O proles Hispanie/O sidus Hispanie, dedicated to Saint
Anthony, which Dufay wrote for the consecration of Donatello's
altarpiece in Padua on 13 June 1450.
In 1438, Dufay, laden with glory, returned definitively to his native
Cambrai; but the contacts with Italy were not interrupted for all that,
as is dearly shown by his correspondence and the solicitations by his
sponsors. The motet dedicated to Saint Anthony, a magnificent example
of the composer's artistic maturity, may be considered a nostalgic
tribute to the country of his youth — to the extent that Dufay,
in his will, explicitly requested that this motet be sung on the eve of
Samt Anthony's Day, after compline.
