To recreate, breathing in a living human vigour, the
song hidden in the
peculiar glides of the old neum music writings – this was the task set
to the compilers of the present record. "The Chironomic Vocal
Exercise" by John Koukouzeles (after an Athens manuscript
from 1336) is an original encyclopaedia of 14th century music. The
famous "master" Koukouzeles has also recreated the popular text
formula "Slava Otsu" (sounding here after an Athens manuscript
from 1453) in an "angel-voiced" ornamented stylе. The chant "Si Vyara"
from the renowned literary monument "Synodikon of Tsar Boril" in its
transcript from the 14th century follows the style of Koukouzeles'
"angel-voiceness". Chanted in Greek and Bulgarian (on the first Sunday
of Long Lent), the melody illustrates the music-reforming initiative of
the great Bulgarian man of letters Patriarch Euthymius, which
initiative introduced the most perfect for the 14th century music in
the Bulgarian liturgy. In the spirit of that same reforming process
were created the sweet-voiced ornamented melodies of archacolyte Eustace,
belonging to the Poutna Moldavian Monastery school of music from the
16th century. Presented here are "Bog Gospod" and "Vsyakoe
Dihanie" included in Eustace's psalm-book from 1511. During the
14th–18th centuries the Byzantine manuscripts contained melodies taken
down in notes, called "Bulgarian". Among them the "Kratuk Bulgarski
Polielei" (Short Bulgarian Polyeleos), after a Vatican manuscript
from the 14th century, reveals a keen sense of exquisite musical form. "Kratema"
by Dimiter Dokiyan (14th с.) belongs to the collections of
"songs without words" – melodies linked by specific syllables, lacking
of any particular meaning, characteristic of the late Middle Ages on
the Balkans. The highly expressive lamenting intonations of the chant
justify its heading – "imitating a Bulgarian bewailing melody".
Connected with the Middle Ages, but already suggestive of the broad
perspectives of Modern Age music is the repertoire of "Bolgarskii
Rospev". Particularly popular amidst the melodies of this
"Bulgarian singing" (as it was referred to in the Russian manuscripts
from the 17th and the 18th centuries) was the Kontakion "Vozbrannoi
Voevode"from Virgin Mary's akatehatist. The praise to Virgin Mary
is expressed in a particularly life-asserting manner by means of its
strophe structure, characteristic of the stylistics of "Bolgarskii
Rospev". Chanted instead of Halleluiah on Holy Saturday, "Voskresni
Bozhe" suggests in a deeply moving manner man's aspirations for
pacification (the melodies are transcriptions after the manuscripts
from the Big Scythian Monastery in Galicia – school of "Bolgarskii
Rospev" during the 17th–18th c.). The fascination of Renaissance
revival is carried also by the paragons of the famous Rila Monastery
vocal school. The Prokeimenons "Glassom Moim" and "Ne Otvrati
Litsa" by Yoasaf Rilski (after some Athon manuscripts from
the beginning of the 19th c.) represent the early stage of the vigorous
cultural growth. "Dostoino Est" by the great Bulgarian activist
of the national revival Neofit Rilski is among the most
frequently performed Rila melodies from the 19th century. It was
preserved in the Zograph manuscript from the 19th c.
Hidden until recently in the old with age pages of the manuscripts,
these melodies were regenerated for our contemporaries by the talent
and the enthusiasm of the Representative Chamber Choir "Sredets",
holder of numerous Bulgarian and international awards, and its
choir-master Alexander Kouyumdjiev. Since its very foundation (in
1972), alongside with its rich artistic and performing activities, the
choir has been making efforts in fulfilling the difficult and pioneer's
task of restoring the musical treasury from the Middle Ages and the
Renaissance of Bulgaria.
