MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI
temps.
orchestres de l'époque: la mandoline, la guitare et la kouitra;
DAHMANE BEN ACHOUR, HADJ M'RIZEK, HADJ MAHFOUD, HADJ MENOUAR, BACHTARZI
frères FAKHARDJI avec leurs principaux élèves;
ALACH TLOUMOUNI, pour GUEROUABI: ELHARRAZ, YA LAYEMNI FLI'ATI, YA MEN
(introduction de la musique andalouse).

MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI
For fifty years or so, MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI has played a prominent
beneficial part in Algerian music whatever the genre, be it art, urban
or folk music (SHAABI).
MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI was born on November 17th, 1920. He had a good
school training and passed the School Certificate. At the age of
seventeen he was a member of the very popular Mouloudia Football Club.
Now the premises of the Club sheltered the ALMIZHAR ELDJAZIRI Musical
Society directed by AHMED SEBTI and MAHIEDDINE LAK'HAL. Professor
M'KHILEF BOUCHAARA used to teach there. MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI liked to
spend his leisure hours there too, strumming tunes on the piano. The
HADJ M'RIZEK ensemble used to rehearse in that very room. It did not
take long before the two men made friends with each other. On the other
hand Mustapha's uncle, HABIB SKANDRANI, noticing his nephew's interest
in the piano - an instrument still disregarded by both Shaabi and Art
music ensembles - took it upon himself to teach him the rudiments.
True, he was only an amateur player himself but extremely learned in
traditional music. Mustapha has also his uncle to thank for getting
interested in such instruments as the mandoline, guitar and kueitra
often heard in the ensembles of that time. In no time did he master
playing them, as well as the beloved piano. It was as a pianist he
began his career in 1938, first with AHMED SEBTI, a master of
Andalusian music, then with HADJ M'RLZEK who was not afraid of
promoting the piano, a way to modernize the Shaabi and Hawzi genres.
It was with RACHID KSENTINI and his partner Marie SOUSSAN, M. SKANDRANI
was first heard on the radio: he was expected to provide a musical
accompaniment for the great actor's sketches.
BACHTARZI MAHIEDDINE, who had detected his talent on that occasion,
recruited him to replace the Jewish pianists, the only great pianists
up to then. In 1940 he toured Algeria together with RACHID KSENTINI,
KALTOUM, MANSALI MOHAMED, DJELLOUL BACHDJARRAH, DRISCAR, MUSTAPHA KATEB
and ABDERRAHMANE AZIZ
A little earlier, in 1939, MOHAMED SALAH ARZOUR who was in charge of
the musical programmes on the radio, had the first of a series of Art
music concerts broadcasted. As soon as MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI had come back
to Algiers, he was engaged to accompany, on the piano, such famous
singers as: DAHMANE BEN ACHOUR, HADJ M'RIZEK, HADJ MAHFOUD, HADJ
MENOUAR BACHTARZI MAHIEDDINE and HADJ M ' HAMED ELANKA.
Then the "Orchestre des sociétés réunies" came
into existence with such masters as AHMED SEBTI, MAHIEDDINE LAK'HAL,
MOHAMED BEN-TEFFAHI, the brothers FAKHARDJI and their most brilliant
pupils; MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI, at the piano, gave the Orchestra the
specific "colour" still found in the way
Andalusian music is played today, and thus founded the Andalusian
School of Algiers.
In the years 1941 to 1945, he participated in the tours arranged by
MAHIEDDINE, entertained the guests of sport clubs, played for audiences
at the "PADOVANI" - the Music Hall of Algiers - during the month of
Ramadan and, on the Radio, accompanied such great masters of Art music
and Shaabi as ELANKA, HADJ M'RIZEK, HADJ MAHFOUD and DAHMANE BEN ACHOUR.
In 1945 he accompanied SALIM HALALI at the great gala given at the
"FORUM", a public square in central Algiers, and also LILI BONICHE at
her galas in Algiers, Oran and Casablanca.
Besides, MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI conducted the orchestra of the Algiers
Opera House every time a new Arabic play was put on the stage forty-six
in all until 1956.
In 1956 BOUDALI SAFIR created the several ensembles of "Radio Alger".
MUSTAPHA SKANDRANI was to be in charge of the urban ensemble, conduct
the folk music ensemble in the place of M. ELANKA, and be the piano
soloist of the art music ensemble conducted by M. FAKHARDJI. This
prevailing position on the radio he kept until Algeria was independent.
And not only was he active on the radio but also on the newly born
television. From 1956 to 1960 he, moreover, conducted the R.T.F.
(French Radio and Television) orchestra in the concerts given at the
Pierre Bordes Hall (today the IBN KHALDOUN Hall) . On the other hand he
has never accepted the mere management of any branch of the radio or
television in spite of all attractive proposals, being convinced such a
job would inhibit his creative powers as a composer. We must not forget
that, since 1938, he has composed more than three hundred musical works
either modern ones or of the shaabi genre. For HADJ M'RIZEK he composed
"YA OCHAQ EZZINE", "KIFACH HILTI", "MIR ELGHRAM". For LILI BONICHE:
"ANA AL WERQA", "MA BIN IH Û MA BINE LALA", "ALACH
TLÛMÛNI". For GUEROUABI : "ELHARRAZ", "YA LAYEMNI FLI'ATI",
"YA MEN TRID QTALI". For CHAOU: "SALEF MEK MÛLT ELB'HA",
"AMERSCILI". And for many young singers many more songs impossible to
list in a short biographical note. To make a long story short, he has
been a permanent member of the well known S.A.C.E.M. since 1961.
(S.A.C.E.M i.e. Society of Authors Compositors Editors of Music).
In Independent Algeria he can boast being the greatest Algerian pianist
alive despite the fact there are many pianists nowadays. He also goes
on conducting both the Shaabi and Andalusian ensembles. When President
BOUMEDIENNE officially visited Morocco, M. SKANDRANI was one in his
train. In 1972, at the head of fifty musicians, he went to Paris as the
piano accompanist of the great masters of art music invited to take
part in the first Algerian Cultural Festival, at the "Theatre des
Champs Elysées". Twenty years earlier, the same M. SKANDRANI had
given a concert at the Paris Opera House, in the presence of the French
Authorities, for the benefit of the victims of the earthquake that had
distroyed Orléansville in 1954.
From 1966 to 1981 he devoted much time to teaching at the Music Academy
of Algiers. Since 1981 he has been in charge of everything related to
Andalusian and Folk music. And not only has he been teaching at the
Academy of Algiers but also at annex Conservatoires founded at ELBIAR,
KOUBA, ELHARRACH, BIR MURAD RAIES, HAY ALBADR and BOLOGHINE. He is
known for prompting his pupils to become conscious of their own
personality and express their originality. Over the years M. SKANDRANI
has also been looking for "voices" able to sing works of art music,
particularly female ones, the demand being important now that art music
has spread all over the country thanks to the many musical societies
active now in all urban surroundings, not only in the towns of Northern
Algeria. His having regularly given concerts at the many Andalusian
Festivals has greatly contributed to promote art music in Algeria
It is a fact that, for years, M. SKANDRANI has been the undisputed
Master of Algerian art music. It proved difficult for me to get him
over to Paris for the recording of a couple of albums as he was always
either on tour or engrossed in teaching or otherwise promoting Algerian
art music. However that may have been, one of the records contains
STIKHBARS in all NAWBAH modes, the other a selection of KHLASSATS,
fourteen only of the very many NAWBAH finales. Later on I was given an
opportunity to make the recording of the main TUSHIAS of Andalusian
music. It was during those recordings made in the best studios of
Paris, as M. SKANDRANI was playing on a grand piano specially tuned for
him a few hours earlier, that I could fathom the unprecedented standard
of his playing. For the rising generations M. SKANDRANI's work will
stand as an example of what an artist can boast: hard work, experience,
authenticity, talent and being an artist always willing to share his
knowledge with all those wishing to benefit from it.
