Lengu' entrebescada
C'aisi vauc entrebescant
Los motz e·l so afinant:
Lengu'entrebescada
Es en la baizada.
— Bernart Marti
[For this is how I go about twining together
the words and refining the music:
(just as) the tongue is intertwined
in the act of kissing.]
The words of troubadour poetry revolve around an invisible keystone:
the essence of desire. Despite their no longer current language and the
frailties of manuscript tradition, these words still speak of that
fundamentally unsolvable mystery to those willing to encounter them:
and so indeed they have done through the ages, as testified by their
literary influence (in realms far removed both from soppy fantasy-style
medievalism and from the worship of ashes sometimes pursued in academic
circles).
In the works of the troubadours, words and music were originally
indissoluble: "a poem without music is like a mill without water", so
ran the saying. Thanks to music, the power of poetic speech and imagery
is embodied in sound and becomes living vibration with each new
performance. But notoriously, due to the conditions in which troubadour
melodies are preserved, it is impossible to perform them today without
making choices.
LA CONTRACLAU's choices in this recording are admittedly radical. For Lengu'entrebescada we selected powerful texts – including one whose melody is lost – composed by major Occitan troubadours, by a trobairitz, and by a Galician jongleur
and extant melodies as material for a creative process inspired by
multiple sources, ranging from pioneering early recordings of medieval
music to extra-European modal traditions and to progressive rock.
Around the heritage of poetic and musical material received from
medieval sources, we have attempted to create a contemporary sound with
a sincerely experimental attitude and, at the same time, an aim to
immediacy.
To be quite clear: we do realise that Guilhem de Peiteus' original music for his Poem of Nothing At All
certainly didn't resemble ours. But we hope to be deemed worthy of the
Count's pardon if we have been so bold as to attempt, by searching for
the right mixture of humility and impertinence, of energy and
awareness, to send him back our own "second key" to that mysterious box
of his. After all, we just want to show some gratitude for the
excellent company he and the others have kept us while we, too, "doze
and walk and stand under the sun".

Nelle opere dei trovatovi parole e suoni erano, all'origine,
in suono, ne fa vibrazione presente.
impossibile eseguirle senza compiere scelte interpretative.
